Amazon Customer: I've had other openers that function the same way (side opening, no sharp edges) and this one does the job perfectly well, but it is not as easy to turn as the others I've used. For older folks or those with arthritis, I don't think it would be a great choice. In fact I often opt for the old cheap grocery store version in my drawer rather than use this one. My older parents can't use it at all.
Amazon Customer "Robin Johnson Esak": MyRösle Can Opener, which I have used and loved for the last five years, broke recently and I found myself in the market for a new can opener. I replaced it with the Kuhn Rikon because it was significantly cheaper. To be honest, these two openers are similar and both simple to use but if I had it to do over again, I'd spend the extra dollars. I preferred the Rosle quite a bit but this one is still good. The main reason for my preference is that the Rosle, after cutting the lid from the can, keeps hold of the lid so you can lift it off simply by lifting the can opener. To drop the lid, you simply turn the handle backwards a quarter turn and the lid is released into whatever receptacle is waiting below it. The Kuhn Rikon add's a step - although it seems similar in the way it removes the lid from the can, you must first turn the handle a quarter turn back to release the can from the can opener (leaving the lid on the can). The Kuhn Rikon does have a little built-in tweezer-like attachment that you can use to pluck the lid off the can but I still prefer the streamlined Rosle. That said, the grip is excellent, the handle easy to turn, and I, frankly, like the fact that it's red - I can see it in the drawer even when it's buried under a dozen other gadgets! :)If you can bring yourself to spend almost $40 for a can opener (and it's worth every penny), then I recommend the Rosle. If these economic times make you want to save money where you can, then this is a very good alternative for half the price.
Amazon Shopper2: It is easy to use and I like its metal construction. For years I have had the Krups electric version of this type of can opener and wanted a manual. I have seen another can opener in plastic that is almost identical to this design- I will stick to the original.
Anthony Louis: I am a fan of Kuhn Rikon products. Having tried their pots, pans, and pressure cookers, I figured I couldn't go wrong with this item. Once again Kuhn Rikon has developed an outstanding product. It's not your run-of-the-mill opener. Instead of cutting the lid off a can and exposing sharp edges that can cut the unwary user, this opener cuts around the edge and produces a removable lid with no sharp edges. I wouldn't go as far as the reviewer who felt that this can opener changed his life, but I am quite pleased and can state unequivocally that this is the best can opener I have ever used. Highly recommended. In fact, it worked so well that I went ahead and bought their easy-to-clean garlic press as well.
Book Lover: I love this can opener. With everyone recycling more and more I often worried about the sharp tuna fish can edges and the like. Well, thanks to this can opener, I no longer have sharp edges, just smooth, beautiful edges. And my old hand Swingaway can opener worked great for 20 years + , but the problem with that was that the food particles attached to the stainless steel and I couldn't clean it no matter what - cat food, tuna juice, tomato soup - all dark spots on the old can opener. Not with this one. The can opener doesn't even touch the food. I have nothing bad to say about the operation of this can opener - it is perfect. This is the can opener you need for the 21st century and beyond!
