J. Busse: Because of the really high cost and all the hype the about these pans you would think they were constructed out of gold. But they aren't. The gasket material is fragile, The fit is not very good and the handles don't even have metal inserts where they attach to the lid, they actually use the bakelite as structure. (the heat differential between the lid and handle causes movement and stress the pulls the screws out of the handle and because the material crumbles you require a new handle at $16 plus shipping every 2 years of regular use or so. The lousy lid screws just self tap into the bakelite handle which almost guarantees they will fail. The other pressure cookers I own like the Fagor do have inserts and the lid handle has never failed on that cooker in the 15 years I have owned it.. I am on my 4th handle in 8 years with the Kuhn Rikon. And the second pot handle.Other things that failed on this pan were the top finishing plate (plastic snap on fitting broke), and the gasket twice (KH says this is normal). All total in the 8 years we have owned this thing the cost is: 4 lid handles (screws pulled out in all cases) $70, Plus 2 vent lids $28 (the current one broke 3 years ago but I just live with it falling off when the lid is inverted, Plus two pan handles $40 Bakelite crumbled under metal band in both cases, and 4 gaskets 450. (although the new black one has lasted almost 2 years now. Total is $180 for 8 years. Hey! that is THE PRICE OF A NEW PAN but the new ones are exactly like the old ones; The non-warranty parts will fail too. KH has done nothing to improve their product in the replacement parts (not warranted) area. They nickle and dime you to death for life. I just bought my last KH part. No more until they are redesigned.Looking on the web one can see I am not alone. There are handles, gaskets, and spare parts in many sites. They are not cheap either. I guess the steel used in the pot is OK It has never failed but it seems every thing else has failed multiple times in the 8 years I have used this. Comparing it to the 5L Fagor which I use for large meals probably more often than the KR, the engineering in the KH is really inferior. The score for maintenance over 4 years is Fagor $20.00 (after 10 years of constant use at least 1x per week the gasket gave out) vs Kuhn Rikon $180. You'd think the Swiss could design something with better quality but that doesn't seem to be in their business model. This is my last KH product. The Fagor line is 1/3 the price and 5x better.
J. Ford: We are a family of 2 who eat a plant-based (no oil) diet for cardiovascular reasons. I cannot possibly imagine why I have waited so long to purchase this perfect-sized SAFE pressure cooker. Perhaps because as a small child 60 years ago, I remember a terrible explosion caused by my Mom's old-fashioned cooker that left the imprint of a pod of okra forever etched on her arm. Believe me...the Kuhn Rikon Duromatic is a totally different design...it locks securely, is quick & easy to bring to the pressure point (and gives 2 clear red lines to tell when you've reached the desired pressure level), is lightning quick to cook our veggies, and so simple to clean that I've used it every single day (several times twice) since it arrived...and you can't open it until you have manually released the pressure or it has cooled to the point of releasing the pressure itself. It is the perfect size for 2 (although I'm using less than half the available space...it cooks with as little as 1/4 cup of liquid)...but I also used it to cook beans for 6 and had ample space. It is my most prized piece of cookware.
Kathy "AnUnnaturalCook": The best thing about aging is that we no longer need a lot to eat. Finally, I can take advantage of this 2.6-quart braiser which can handle recipes for 2-3 people. Tonight I made Lorna Sass's 15-minute chili. This pan allowed me to brown the ground meat. When it was time to add the lid, it took less than 5 minutes to come up to pressure. Voila, a tasty dinner for 2, with leftovers for lunch. As for the lid, have a wooden spoon on hand, and you won't have a problem with rapid release.Amazon.com has combined the reviews for the 2.6-qt braiser and the 5-L braiser. Well, I love both! It just depends on the recipe I am using. The old-style steam vent is no problem at all-- I don't need the new Duromatic Top, it appears. I am very handy with a wooden spoon.
KindleBabe: Love the size and the pressure cooker (8.5 quart). I am still learning how to cook in it, but so far the family has been thrilled with everything I have served (pulled pork, spaghetti sauce, beef stew, chilli, vegetable soup).I started off pressure cooking with an electric pressure cooker that only lived one week. I reordered from Amazon and bought this one to replace it. I am extremely pleased with the cooker and Amazon's service.
Linda "cooking enthusiast": First of all, this PC is gorgeous to look at! It also is a very nice size for one or two people and for cooking all kinds of vegetables, small meals, etc.It is SO easy to use! I'd never used a stove top pressure cooker before and in less than five minutes I had all the information I needed to be able to cook on my range with ease and confidence.If you've used the old rocker-style cookers you'll love how completely quiet this unit is.I'm amazed at how easy it is to prepare quick meals that taste as good or better than those cooked the conventional ways.Edited to add: Since I purchased this cooker I have ordered THREE more Kuhn Rikons in different sizes.I have used this small cooker almost daily since its purchase and I don't know how I managed to cook for so long without it. The smaller size is fabulous for vegetables and smaller meals.I've cooked beets, carrots, chicken Marsala, Lentils, Red Beans and Rice and countless other dishes. Everything has been just wonderful. I love having the larger sizes for stocks and stews and soups as well but this one is my go-to cooker, it is a kitchen essential for me.
