David Carlin: I bought this unit back in 2001. It took me some time early on to understand the key to making good espresso primarily lies with the grind. The problem I had early on was that I was buying the pre-grined espresso coffee in the supermarket from companies like Lavazza etc, however I learned that these grinds were not refined enough for espresso machines. I bought a standard blade grinder and normally I will take a standard supermarket grind along with such popular espresso roasts as Starbucks, and put them into the grinder and grind for at least 10 seconds to develop a sandy gritty appearance but not powdery. Prior to learning this, I was unhappy that I wasn't getting the espresso I expected with the Crema on the top.Well, none of this was due to this espresso machine. The Briel has been an excellent purchase. The quality of the brewing is great. I've had no issues with the pump or frothing system, and the brewing produces a beautiful creme on the top. Also, I noticed at least for my tastes that a double shot cycle produces a much better espresso.a great unit.Update as of 02/07/08 - Buy a Burr Grinder. This is the key to wonderful espresso. I played with a variety of grinds and now have a suitable grind for the Briel. It is wonderful.Update as of 2011: I've finally de-mineralized the unit and it is still working absolutely perfect. What an astounding machine. I still adore it. Never had to replace any parts and it is still brewing great espresso with exceptonal crema :)Again, want to remind everyone to buy a Burr Grinder. You will have a much more uniform grind.......it is needed for any espresso machine
D. Cobos: I bought this machine in Sept. 2004 and for the most part it has worked well. However there are some things I've been disatisfied with. One being that it is sometimes hard to get a good seal and the unit leaks water around the espresso holder making a mess and a weakened brew. Also the foamer is extremely difficult to clean and my old $40 unit made better foam. And lastly over time the rubber gasket sealing the grounds holder has deteriorated (not a flaw really, I've brewed a lot of espresso) and cannot find a replacement parts list either here on Amazon or at Briel's website. I have emailed them for assistance and we'll see how that goes. All in all if I had it to do over I'd probably fork out some more money for a higher end system.
dogster: Mine arrived with a piece of the front broken off and scratches all over the front. Makes me wonder if it's a piece of junk, not sure if I should look for a different machine or get a replacement. All I know if I have NO espresso right now!
Elaine Ellerton: I have had this machine for a few weeks now, and yes, it has done all the things that the bad reviews have said it would do e.g. watery espresso left in holder that slops everywhere, leak from around the seal when making a shot, etc. BUT, they have all happened because of exactly what other reviews have said...not cleaning the seal of all coffee grinds before inserting the holder, not putting it in correctly, packing the espresso to hard or adding too much. When you figure out not to do these things, which isn't hard at all, then it makes beautiful, wonderful espresso with perfect crema. The frother so far has been really good. I guess it could swing out further from the machine, but it is really powerful. The water tank is a good size and it really does look good in the kitchen. The only downside is that there is a seperate button to push after you have brewed the coffee in order to get the steam hot enough (this seperate temperature is actually a good thing), however, the button stays depressed after you push it which means that the next time you turn the machine on, it automatically goes to the 'steam' temperature unless you depress the steam button. I often forget this and burn my espresso. Other than that, I LOVE this machine.
JDSnook: I just received my Briel ES35AB Chamonix Pump Espresso Machine With Auto Espresso Flow and had it up and running in 5 minutes (that included: rinsing the reservoir and attachments, plugging in the electrial cord, pouring the water into the reservoir and turning it on). Every part of the espresso maker is working wonderfully. The reasons for purchasing this machine was so I could have a reservoir of water and also to use the espresso pods in order to make numerous individual cups of espresso for our dinner parties. It is very easy to clean afterwards, and in just a minute or two after turning it on, just put the espresso pod in the pod holder, insert and turn, press the button, and in 20-30 seconds you have a cup of espresso. I am very satisfied with the product and would encourage others to purchase it as well.
